Reference by Timothy Dowling to the alto trombone by Markus Leuchter:
I have known Markus Leuchter for many years, from the time he was working for the famous Heribert Glassl workshop. His workmanship and dedication are first class, and he has a very strong idea how he wants his instruments to sound.
I am very proud to play on Markus’ superb alto trombone.
After many years of playing a Glassl alto trombone I thought I would never need to buy another one but after having tested many of Markus’ trombones over the years and many visits to his workshop in Herzogenrath/Kohlscheid I was finally convinced that his alto actually surpassed the Glassl in every way. Firstly the intonation through the harmonic series was superior, and as good as any alto made today. Secondly the instrument had a usable seventh position that was in tune, and a responsive high C sharp. And since it was based on the same original Kuhn model, the sound was ideal for both solo playing and orchestra. This is an alto that holds its sound in fortissimo but also blends equally well with traditional German trombones like Kruspe or Lätzsch, or modern American style trombones like Bach and Conn. The removable B flat valve section gives even more ease of low register and added weight of sound for orchestral playing.
You could use this alto just as well in Mozart as Bruckner. It has clarity and warmth in equal degrees!
Bravo and many thanks, Markus!
